Location: Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre Reporting to: President and CEO The National Music Centre (NMC) is seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial Director of Fund Development to lead our fundraising activities locally, regionally, and nationally to help meet the strategic objectives of NMC. Joining us at an exciting time in our growth and evolution, as NMC transitions from a capital campaign during our building project into full operations, the Director of Development will be a crucial leader in strengthening and deepening our supporters’ connection to the power of music. This is an exceptional opportunity for a proven fundraising professional to increase and enhance transformational support for the home for music in Canada. The Director of Fund Development will help chart NMC’s overall direction and strategy, and specifically lead a balanced funding solicitation program tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable us to attract, retain and motivate donors, sponsors, grantors and fundraising volunteers. Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Director of Development will be a member of NMC’s Leadership Team and will therefore play a lead role in the NMC’s overall strategic planning. Additionally, the Director of Development will have frequent interaction and collaboration with colleagues in Programming, Collections, Finance, Visitor Services, Operations, and Marketing Departments, as well as with senior NMC volunteers. The Director of Development’s key mandate is the oversight of fund development revenue streams, including major and leadership gifts, annual and monthly giving through direct response campaigns, grants from both public and private sources, and donor events such as NMC’s annual benefit auction. The Director of Fund Development will manage their own portfolio of prospects and donors at various stages of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship with a focus on major and leadership gifts over $25,000. An inspiring and motivating leader with very good people skills, the Director of Development will lead the efforts of three direct reports, including a Senior Development Officer, Annual Giving Officer, and a Stewardship/Events administrative role. The Director of Development will bring an innovative and progressive approach to fundraising, supporting our efforts to be innovative and entrepreneurial. Fundraising for the National Music Centre Through the past and current generosity and commitment of our donors, grantors and sponsors, we invest in music related programs, in education, live-music, exhibitions and incubation/creation (ie. artist and new works development) that together, celebrates and disseminates the power of music to strengthen the vibrancy, diversity, resilience and success of our community and our country. Numerous donors, grantors and sponsors have allowed us to invest more than $136M in the construction of Studio Bell and over $5M into our programs and services each year. Responsibilities Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Revenue Generation: • Managing a personal pipeline of major and leadership gift donors/sponsors (capable of giving at least $25,000). • Appropriately representing NMC to donors, prospects, grantors, sponsors, and fundraising volunteers. • Developing and executing strategies related to each fundraising stream. • Supporting the CEO in their portfolio management; assisting volunteer Board members and other fundraising volunteers to identify, cultivate and solicit gifts. • Executing and evaluating the implementation of fundraising strategies and plans including budgets, financial targets, and performance goals and measures. • Determining revenue projections and tracking of performance. • Analyzing, interpreting, and implementing donor prospect research. • Supporting the positioning of NMC as a positive, worthwhile and significant fundraising organization and a desired place of investment. • Accompanying staff on strategic donor calls as required. • Ensuring cultivation, acknowledgment and recognition programs are effective. • Ensuring data capture is well managed and aligns with fundraising strategies. Strategy Development: • Developing a fully integrated fundraising strategic plan for NMC, with ensuring operations plans and specific targets. • Developing and executing diverse strategies and tactics for each fundraising revenue stream. • In partnership with the CEO establishing appropriate annual goals, targets and metrics to ensure that all fundraising revenue generating efforts are effective, efficient, and successful. • Establishing tools and performance measures to ensure effectiveness of the department. • Mitigating and managing all risk associated with strategy and operations; informing the CEO and leadership on the condition of NMC’s fundraising streams and all-important factors influencing them. Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre | 850 4 Street SE Calgary, AB T2G 1R1 @nmc_canada #StudioBell studiobell.ca • Constantly assessing fundraising activities and practices, including cost-effectiveness and return on investment; adjusting to meet current and emerging financial needs and conducting a quarterly post mortem. • Helping ensure that all development and fundraising activities are aligned with the organization’s mission, vision and values, the AFP code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct, and in compliance with all relevant regulations and laws. Team Leadership: • Overall, contributing to our culture by nurturing a positive environment that will stimulate and motivate staff to contribute their full potential to the realization of NMC’s strategic goals and objectives. • Coaching, motivating and evaluating three direct reports; and providing a clear understanding of the job responsibilities of each team member. • Approve overall accountabilities for the teams, and overseeing performance metrics. • Recruiting, hiring and retention in support of current and future NMC needs. • Conducting performance management and performance reviews to ensure strategic department and organizational goals and objectives are accomplished. • Coaching and inspiring senior volunteers on an as-needed basis. Administration and Planning: • Collaborating with the CEO in developing the department budget and managing all costs associated with the department’s annual budget for all development programs, campaigns and activities. • Managing the reputational risk associated with all fundraising related revenue streams. • Identifying and addressing organizational development issues that challenge and support effectiveness. • Evaluating on an ongoing basis the effect of internal and external forces on the organization and its fund development and recommending changes as required. • Ensuring establishment and compliance with the organization’s own philanthropic and sponsorship principles, policies and procedures. • Recommending policies and best practices as they relate to fund development and sponsorship. • Keeping informed of developments in philanthropy and fund development; informing the CEO and volunteers on current trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy making. Experience and qualifications: • Strong skills set in managing complex relationships and experience working with donors. • Knowledge and experience with arts philanthropy is preferred. • Minimum 5 years fundraising experience in complex organizations. • Demonstrated success in managing and implementing a comprehensive fund development program and producing charitable contributions. • Knowledgeable and experienced in the breadth of fundraising activities, including the current research and trends, programs and techniques, and best practices. • Comprehensive management skills with strong experience in short and long-term planning, financial management, values clarification, organizational behaviour and development, and governance. • Skilled and experienced in evaluating, directing and motivating staff; highly competent enabler of volunteers and staff. • Fluent in CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) regulations and receipting guidelines. • A bachelor’s degree is required; CFRE certification would be considered an asset. • Ability to travel nationally. • Experience with Raisers Edge is an asset. • All successful candidates will be required to pass a security clearance and vulnerable sector check.
