Job Description

The New Brunswick Museum is the major multidisciplinary institution that collects and interprets the cultural and natural heritage of the province. Under the Exhibitions & Visitor Experience Department (E&VE), the educator-interpreter develops and delivers museum programs to diverse audiences in line with the mission and the exhibitions program of the museum. Supervised by the Head, E&VE, and working in concert with two other educator-interpreters (each of whom has a target audience), the incumbent also works with other teams in the museum.

As the result of maternity leave, we are looking for a dynamic educator-interpreter for the primary school and toddler audiences. The Department of E&VE is also reviewing its educational programs and the future educator-interpreter will play an active role.

MAIN TASKS:
Developing Program (40% of the time)
- Review, evaluate and update existing educational programs.
- Undertake appropriate research, keep the documentation organized, produce program documents (detailing the communication objectives, materials needed and program description) that will be reviewed by curators and used for future interpreters
- Develop a contact network with specialists of the field, services in place in the province and with schools (anglophone and francophone) across the province.
- Participate in the development of the procedures for curatorial approval of programs.

Delivering educational programs (50%)
- Organize schedule in conjunction with the booking agenda
- Prepare the materials needed for booked programs
- Welcome groups and deliver programs inside/outside of the museum
- Evaluate personal performance and that of the other interpreters for program improvement.

Administration (10%)
- Organize the work space
- Supervise students-interpreters (mainly during the summer)

REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in education, museology, cultural history or natural history, or other related fields. A Master’s Degree would be a valuable asset.
- More than 3 years experience in museum interpretation and developing programs
- Bilingual (French /English), an advanced level is mandatory. You must be comfortable speaking to audiences in both official languages
- Qualities : interpersonal skills, comfortable with public speaking (especially to toddlers and primary school audiences), resourceful, responsible, independent, versatile, fast learner, organized, able to work in a team, honest critical assessment of own work .
- Salary: 20-22$/h, 36.25h/week. Contract of 1 year / (temporary maternity leave replacement).
