Job Description:

 

The South Peace Historical Society invites applications for a temporary 14-week full-time student position as an Archival Assistant at the South Peace Historical Society Archives, from May 14 through August 24, 2018.

The Archival Assistant will assist with the ongoing digitization of archival materials and the development of social media content related to the collection. The Archival Assistant will support the day-to-day operations of the Archives by maintaining a consistent presence within the archives, assisting with inquiries, accepting donations and assisting in the accessioning process.

The Archival Assistant reports to the South Peace Historical Society Archivist/Manager and will be responsible for video accessioning, conversion, processing and general collections management related to the VHS collection in the Archives’ holdings. Under the direction of the Archivist/Manager, the Archival Assistant will number video files, describe each video, and enter them into the South Peace Historical Society Archival database according to the standards set by the Rules for Archival Description (RAD). The Archival Assistant may be asked to assist in other archival activities, such as research for new displays, or creating social media content related to the collection.

This position will provide direct hands-on, career-related experience for a student considering a career in an archives or museum related field.

The ideal Archival Assistant will be motivated with an interest in history and good organizational skills. In addition, the ideal candidate will:

- Be currently enrolled in graduate or undergraduate studies in History, Anthropology, Archival Studies, Museum Studies or a related field
- Have experience using PC operating system
- Be proficient using MS Office, including Word, and Excel (or another database program)
- Have an interest in, or familiarity with, movie file editing software
- Have excellent written communication skills, including an ability to effectively use social media

Please note that this temporary position is supported by Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations, and is subject to confirmation of funding. All candidates must meet the Young Canada Works General Student Eligibility Criteria:

• be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada.

awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
• be legally entitled to work in Canada.
• be between 15* and 30 years of age at the start of employment (*where permissible under provincial/territorial labour laws).
• meet the specific eligibility criteria of the program to which you apply.

• be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment (minimum 30 hours a week).
• not have another full-time job while employed in a YCW job.
