The Canadian Centre for the Great War, a Montréal based heritage collection and research centre, is seeking a Collections Assistant/Technician for a 4-month period (May – August). Reporting to the Collections Manager, the Collections Assistant/Technician is responsible for the design, prototyping and fabrication of a custom preservation containers/folders sample set. S/he will also assist in creating a tailor made storage space and a collections management area.
Responsibilities • Create design plan for selected objects, produce prototypes and any iterations needed to improve final designs • Test designs with volunteers to review ease of replication and make necessary improvements • Produce and edit final documentation of process • Provide cataloguing and descriptive information in French and English for objects going into new storage space • Install shelving in storage area and work surface and chairs in collection work area • Organize and equip collection management area with tools and supplies in work area for use Requirements • Candidate must meet eligibility criteria of Young Canada Works summer job program • Highly developed time management skills, Detail oriented • Basic understanding of collection care and artifacts handling, material handling, environmental factors • Consistent skills in material handling (cutting, scoring, folding) when creating preservation containers an asset • Basic knowledge or interest in cataloguing, lot and object numbering system • Intermediate to advanced skills in French and English • Basic understanding of file formats/image resolutions and some proficiency in photo editing programs
