Purpose of the Position

As a team player with initiative the Collections Manager will provide a source of skilled support for collections and administration to create an effective and efficient working operation.
The position is primarily responsible for collection development and exhibitions, research, and interpretation relating to the Museum collection areas. This position also assists with guest services, programming, and event planning.
This position reports directly to the Executive Director.
The Hangar Flight Museum is seeking qualified applicants for a Collections Manager position. The position is year-round and full-time at 37.5 hour per week with some evenings and weekends required. The Collections Manager will be a detail oriented individual with education and practical experience working in museums. The Collections Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of collections management for the Museum. This includes documentation, care, conservation, security, and storage, as well as proper exhibition. The Collections Manager is also responsible for records and physical management of incoming and outgoing loaned artifacts and takes on a supporting role in the development and implementation of the Museum’s temporary and permanent exhibits.

Key Responsibilities

Ensures all aspects of the physical and records management of the archival, artifact and other collections at the Museum are handled according to legal requirements and are up to professional standards. This includes: accurate and up to date record keeping, appropriate standards of storage, security and risk management and taking preventative conservation action.
Evaluates current practices, stays current with professional standards, and develops new practices in collections management and care.
Ensures long-range sustainability of the collection and makes use of changing technology.
Addresses legal issues of collections, and endeavours to meet the needs of a diverse audience.
Respects cultural origins and the cultural integrity of objects and their uses.
Manages all incoming loans of artifacts or archival material ensuring accurate and up to date record keeping, and documentation maintenance.
Coordinates artifact collection acquisitions and procedures.
Works with the Office Manager to maintain contact with donors.
When required, arranges for monetary appraisals of the collections for either tax or insurance purposes.
Retrieves and prepares artifacts and artifact information, conducts artifact related research and provides input to staff regarding collection elements for exhibits, programs and other museum needs.
Is involved in the planning, developing, and mounting of temporary and permanent exhibitions.
Manages loans of travelling exhibitions and artifacts/material including: arranging packing, shipping, storage and insurance, customs, etc. as required and keeps related records.
Prepares budgets and monitors expenditures specific to collections
Prepares funding applications/grants related to areas of responsibility as required.
Trains, supervises, and evaluates volunteers who report to this position.
Apply collection knowledge and expertise to specific on-going projects approved by the Board.

Minimum Standards

Working knowledge of the Past Perfect Museum program.
Degree in a discipline appropriate to museums, such as museum management, curatorial, collections management, archival studies and conservation or a combination of related training and experience.
Considerable knowledge of collections management care, documentation and preventative conservation practices and standards.
Excellent meeting planning and reporting skills.
Must have an above average knowledge of computer software programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher etc.
Criminal record check.
