The Opportunity
The Department of History in the Faculty of Arts at Ryerson University in the city of Toronto on the territory of the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Huron-Wendat invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at Assistant Professor rank, beginning July 1, 2019, subject to final budgetary approval. The area of specialization is the history of Indigenous peoples. The successful candidate will join a growing number of faculty members in the Faculty of Arts whose research and teaching focuses on Indigenous issues.
All candidates with research and teaching expertise focused on the history of Indigenous peoples (including North American, global, comparative and/or cultural contact) will be considered. We especially welcome applications from scholars with demonstrated capacity also to contribute to methodological and/or other courses in the department’s BA program.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include: teaching and supervising at the undergraduate level; contributing to the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Faculty of Arts, including taking a lead role in curriculum development/expansion as appropriate; establishing and maintaining a strong, independent, externally-funded research agenda; and participating in the academic life of the Department of History, the Faculty of Arts and the University. The successful candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to Ryerson’s interdisciplinary programs, including the BA in Arts and Contemporary Studies, and graduate programs such as Immigration and Settlement Studies, Policy Studies, and Communication and Culture.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in history or a related field (or will expect to do so by July 1, 2019). Applicants must also demonstrate an ability to contribute to both our undergraduate and graduate programs through evidence of high-quality teaching, including experience with course/curriculum review/development, a strong, emerging research profile and scholarly record that demonstrates creativity and evidence of impact, such as peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and other similar contributions, an ability to establish and maintain an independent, externally funded research program, as well as the capacity for collegial service. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to upholding the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as they pertain to service, teaching, and scholarly, research or creative activities.
