Job Description:

 


jThe Manager of Indigenous Initiatives is a skilled relationship-builder in the private and public sectors with a passion for making a difference with a focus on arts and culture in the community. The Manager has in-depth knowledge and experience working with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities and demonstrates an understanding of historical context, cultural practices, protocols and Indigenous ways of knowing and being.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assume a leadership role in the Indigenization initiatives at the WAG, involving the First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities
• Develop and monitor departmental budget
• Conceive curriculum-guided strategies for integrating education programs at all levels with Indigenous knowledge.
• Work directly with WAG development, fundraising and marketing to build capacity for Indigenous programs, partnerships and overall outreach.
• Act as a liaison and coordinator for the Government of Nunavut/WAG partnership and agreements
• Act as a liaison with Indigenous and Northern government and stakeholder representatives and groups at the municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal levels.
• Coordinate with the WAG curatorial and education departments to support exhibitions, programs, and collections development.
• Maintain a dynamic profile in the museum, cultural, and educational sectors, and represent the institution at functions in the community, in the media, and on various committees as required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in a field relevant to the primary responsibilities and two to four years related experience.
• Demonstrated work and life experience in developing and leading initiatives, and creating partnerships with and for First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.
• Knowledge of one of the following languages – Cree, Dene, Michif, Ojibwe, Inuktitut, Dakota or Ojibwe-Cree, an asset.
• Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, organizational, communication, media and grant writing, negotiation and team-building skills.
• Capacity to engage members of diverse communities and skilled in a variety of consultation techniques, protocols and strategies.
• Aptitude to work in a service-oriented environment as both a member of a team and independently.
• Superior ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and discretion.
• Diligent attention to detail.
