Campbell River Art Gallery (CRAG) wishes to hire for the limited-term contract position of Assistant Curator of Engagement. We are the sole public art gallery on the Northern part of Vancouver Island, BC. Our exhibition spaces consist of a Main Gallery and a Satellite Gallery for exhibition, a studio for classes, and a gift shop featuring fine arts and craft. Our annual programming includes eight contemporary art exhibitions, which run in concert with our educational programming and special events.

Reporting to the Curator of Contemporary Art, this position is accountable to deliver all public outreach activities over 34-weeks that will engage new audiences in a conversation about contemporary art. The activities to be delivered range from facilitating artist talks, artist panel discussions, specialized workshops, facilitating Super Saturday family art activities, leading guided tours, school tours and pop-up activities in the community. The position will also be accountable for future research for the 2020 programming season and onward.

The Assistant Curator of Engagement applicants will have a background and/or specific interest in contemporary art with proven experience in the techniques of art education and engagement.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Degree in Studio Arts, Art education or a related discipline;
Broad knowledge of contemporary art and artists in Canada and beyond;
Flexible hours are required in support of gallery public events;
2 + years of experience delivering programming in a professional museum or gallery context
Public speaking;
Research skills;
Coordination and logistics skills;
Understanding of the techniques related to contemporary art practice.

Good visual acuity and aesthetic judgment abilities;
Ability to work and thrive in a small team environment;
Interpersonal skills, combined with the capability to inspire others;
Time-management skills with the ability to work towards multiple tasks

SALARY AND HOURS

This full-time, 28 hours per week, 34-week internship position is from April 15 2018 to November 1, 2019. Hourly rate of pay is $18 per hour. Applicants with disabilities may request a reduced schedule.
