Term: 30 April 2018 through September 3, 2018, plus September 9, 2018
Hours of Work: 35 hours/week. Standard shift is 9:30am – 5:15pm (may vary based on site need). Part time hours may be negotiated. UCHV is opened 7 days a week – weekend shifts are required
Wage: $15.00 – 15.50/hour
Description: As part of a dynamic team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional visitor experiences, which are both enlightening and enriching, on the front-lines of this unique living history open-air museum. Wearing a historical costume, you will deliver interpretive and education programs to the public and school groups and contribute to the authentic presentation of the UCHV. You will use your dramatic flair and excellent communication skills to engage visitors with the history, cultural beliefs and traditions of Ukrainian settlement in east central Alberta to 1930. Your interpretation and program delivery will ensure visitors’ experiences at the site are both educational and entertaining.
Responsibilities: Depending on your specific role, you will:
• Deliver engaging programming, tours and historic activities to visitors of all ages and abilities, including school groups, seniors groups, families, day camp participants, etc. as either a first-person or third-person interpreter
o First-person interpreter – portraying historic individuals by adopting historically appropriate accents, behaviours, personal histories and activities
o Third-person interpreter – delivering guided tours or pre-registered programs as a “tour guide” rather than as a historic character
• Provide exceptional customer service to all visitors to the museum
• Regularly completing one or more of the following historic activities: gardening, farming, household tasks including cleaning, cooking, operating historic vehicles, playing games, doing crafts, etc.
• Delivering information and programs in an accurate and authentic way, as per training
• Maintain the cleanliness of public display areas and historic buildings
• Implement specialized historic activities or demonstrations as part of special events, programs or outreach activities
• Assist with maintenance of artifacts and/or program supplies
• Other related duties as required
Qualifications & Assets:
• Completion of high school (grade 12); Post-secondary education (current or complete) is an asset, with preference for studies in history, education, arts, drama, museum studies, tourism and recreation, cultural studies
• Highly developed verbal communication, presentation and customer service skills
• Ability to learn and retain historical information
• Outgoing, polite and friendly; must enjoy dealing with people of all ages and backgrounds
• Program delivery experience with the general public and especially children
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Mature and responsible attitude
• Must be comfortable working independently as well as in a team
• Knowledge of Ukrainian language and culture is desirable but not required
• Ability to work regular weekends, holidays and special event days
• Experience working in a museum or historic site is an asset
• Knowledge of Western Canadian history, with an emphasis on east central Alberta is an asset
• Experience with relevant historic activities or skills such as cooking, gardening, farming, woodworking, etc. is an asset
• Valid Class 5 drivers’ license is an asset
• Standard First Aid is an asset
Notes: A security clearance is a condition of employment. Successful candidates will be required to obtain a Security Clearance (Vulnerable Persons) from the police. Candidates must provide written documentation verifying that they are in compliance with legal requirements to work in jobs outside of post- secondary institutions in Canada at the time of their application for employment. All references will be reviewed.
