Job Summary

The Canadian Centre for Architecture is an institution responsive to the cultural content of our time, fueling crucial conversation with the audience. The Technician, Exhibitions, under the supervision of the Production Manager, Exhibitions, will operate within the CCA Programs division and collaborate closely with the Designer, Exhibitions and Buildings. The Programs division researches and organizes exhibitions and public programs as a form of cultural production to suggest new perspectives for architecture debate as a catalyst for original inquiry.
The responsibility of this job includes all technical aspects of all phases of exhibitions, loans or other presentation of 2D and 3D objects. The incumbent prepares, installs and de-installs objects, audio-visual equipment in the galleries during installation and de-installation phases. The incumbent collaborates with the Registrar, the Coordinator, Digital Media and the Conservation and Preservation department during the preparation, installation and dismantling phases of exhibitions. The technician, Exhibitions maintains the wood shop, the workshop, the staging and the external storage.

Key responsibilities:

Preparation and production of exhibitions and loans
• Creates prototypes and furniture from plans provided by the Production Manager, Exhibitions and Designer, Exhibitions and Building
• Builds temporary walls, makes furniture and frames
• Oversees production lists
• Prepares and installs wall graphics
• Orders materials, tools and equipment
• Maintains and organizes the furniture inventory at the external storage site
• Maintains the wood shop, workshop, staging and other work spaces
• Stays informed about various materials and construction techniques, as well as preventative conservation standards established by the CCA’s Conservation and Preservation service
• Assists occasionally with technical drawings

Installation, maintenance and dismantling of exhibitions
• Installs and dismantles exhibitions according to the instructions of the Production Manager, Exhibitions
• Installs works of art and audio-visual equipment
• Assists in lighting according to conservation standards and the curatorial concept
• Maintains inventories of items such as furniture, frames and showcases
• Assists the Registrar in packing and unpacking loans
• Coordinates transportation and storage of furniture at the exhibition warehouse
• Maintains the galleries by performing daily inspections

Required qualification:
• Education level: College degree in museology, Bachelor’s degree in art, or relevant experience including knowledge of principles of Museum Culture
• Number of years of experience required: 2 to 5 years
• Dexterity and ability to work with delicate objects
• Skills in carpentry and framing tools
• Ability to read and make technical plans
• Ability to work in high and tight places
• Flexible schedule; the incumbent may occasionally be asked to work late or on weekends
• Good knowledge of the Adobe suite and Vector Works an asset
• Knowledge of spoken and written French and English
