Job Description

The Archives Assistant will be responsible for an inventory of sections H and N of the Historeum’s second floor archival storage. The inventory project will involve assessing boxes consisting primarily of textual records to determine if the records require attention such as re-housing, arrangement and description, or if they are considered non-archival. The Archives Assistant will isolate any records that appear to be unprocessed or require reappraisal. The Archives Assistant will conduct an appraisal/reappraisal of records stored within sections H and N of the archival holdings. Any non-archival material will be deaccessioned and/or removed from the holdings. The Archives Assistant will process any unprocessed records and create finding aids. The Archives Assistant will remove books from the archival holdings and process them to the reference library. The Archives Assistant will update the database to reflect the changes.

This position will be located at the Colchester Historeum, 29 Young Street, Truro, Nova Scotia.

The pay for this position will be up to $15 per hour

Qualifications:

All applicants must:

• be registered in the Young Canada Works online candidate inventory (www.youngcanadaworks.gc.ca) and meet the eligibility criteria of the Young Canada Works internship program.

• be a recent graduate with a degree or college certificate in museology.

• have data entry experience

• have strong communication and organizational skills

• have strong computer skills (Word, PowerPoint, e-mail, Excel, WordPress)

• be fluent in English

• possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team

• be able to read cursive writing

The following are considered assets to this position

• Knowledge of best practices in archives and/or collections management.

• Experience handling archival material.

• Knowledge of Nova Scotia history.

Offer of employment is conditional upon the completion of all applicable background checks and confirmation of credentials, the results of which must be satisfactory to the employer or will result in termination of your employment. Salary Range: $15/ hour for a 35-hour week plus 4% vacation pay

Period of Employment: 23 weeks

Start date: October 7, 2019

End date: March 29, 2020
