The Stewart Museum is seeking a Part-time Interpreter

Reporting to the Coordinator, Education and Group Reservations, the Guide presents a variety of educational, community, cultural activities highlighting the Stewart Museum’s collections and the heritage of the Museum’s site. Created with current exhibitions in mind, educational and cultural programs focus on a varied clientele:  school groups, day camps, special interest groups, families, tourists, community groups etc.

Responsibilities
• Present educational programs to visitor groups by interpreting and presenting exhibitions (permanent and temporary) and educational workshops;
• Be completely familiar with the Museum’s current exhibitions, educational programs and participative approach, through training sessions and educational materials provided by the Museum’s Education, Community and Cultural Services;
• Assure the correct behaviour of visitors within the exhibition areas;
• Assist in the creation and maintenance of pedagogic materials used in the presentation of interpretive activities; keep the Coordinator aware of any damage, wear or repair needs in the educational materials; prepare installations and materials required for activities;
• Complete various reports for the Service;
• Participate in the general upkeep of the Interpretation team's locale.
 
In order to maintain the quality of services offered to the public, the Guide is expected to:
• Attend training sessions on various topics related to Museum programs;
• Become informed on various visitor profiles to better address each audience;
• Be completely familiar with the Museum’s current exhibitions;
• Master a variety of interpretation techniques included participatory approaches;
• Vary group presentation techniques according to specific clienteles.


Work Conditions
• Part-time unionized position with on-call flexible hours on weekdays and weekends;
• Starting salary: $19.32 per hour;
• Starting date:  beginning of September 2019.


Qualifications and Skills
• Fluency in both English and French; knowledge of a third language would be an asset;
• Cegep diploma in relevant field (Social Studies, History, Education, Museum Studies);
• Knowledge of Canadian history and sociocultural issues;
• Sensitivity to cultural diversity;
• Engaging presence and excellent communication skills;
• Interest in working with all age groups, including children;
• Creativity, imagination, and dynamism; willingness to learn;
• Punctuality, strong sense of responsibility and team spirit.
