About the Aurora Historical Society

The Aurora Historical Society (AHS) in Aurora, Ontario is a membership based organization concerned with the preservation, and history of Aurora.

In addition to educational programming, outreach, and exhibitions the AHS owns and operates Hillary House National Historic Site as a year-round historic house museum. The mission of the society is to preserve, interpret, and promote the social, cultural, and material heritage of the community of Aurora for the education, enrichment, and enjoyment of present and future generations.

The AHS is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, with one full time staff, two part time staff, and approximately 30 additional volunteers. The AHS has an annual revenue base of $200,000 per year and is an incorporated non-profit charitable organization.

Job Responsibilities

The Executive Director/Curator will report to the Board of Directors and oversee the day to day operations of the Aurora Historical Society and Hillary House National Historic Site, including operations, collections management, exhibit production, public relations, and fundraising. Includes management of two part-time staff members, and approximately 40 volunteers. Primary functions associated with this position include the following:

  • Curator
  • Maintain accurate collections data
  • Continue to accession and document Hillary Collection
  • Create a multi-year plan for exhibit production and display, aligned with the mission of the AHS
  • Maintain and improve collections storage
  • Volunteer recruitment and management
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers
  • Communications
  • Create regular social media content, including responding to messages and comments
  • Ensure aurorahs.com content is up to date and accurate
  • Oversee monthly email updates to members
  • Create and distribute print media
  • Create and distribute digital media
  • Fundraising
  • Prepare and submit application forms for all available Federal, Provincial and Municipal grants that can benefit the Society and Hillary House, including Canada. Summer Jobs, ect
  • Assist in the acquisition of Corporate partners and donations
  • Works with volunteers to plan and execute fundraising events, currently including a major evening entertainment event for about 200 attendees
  • Leads efforts to secure financial resources for the execution of exhibitions through a combination of grants, sponsorships, and donations
  • Work with Board of Directors to create a comprehensive budget
  • Ensure that all policies are accurate and up to date
  • Community Projects
  • Develop partnerships with other groups and community members
  • Plan and execute projects and events with partners for the betterment of the AHS and the community of Aurora
  • Staff management
  • Monitor all staff including responsibilities, expectations, and working hours
  • Recruit, train, and manage any new staff (including Summer Students, and Interns)
  • Maintain regular and open communication channels
  • Address any staff questions or concerns
  • Conduct semi-annual staff evaluations
  • Give tours and welcome guests
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a university degree in Arts or Cultural Management or Museum studies; graduate level is an asset;
  • 3+ years working in a museum setting;
  • Knowledgeable about 19th and 20th century Canadian history;
  • Excellent organization and time management skills with an ability to manage own workflow to ensure quality and efficiency;
  • Demonstrated customer service experience;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work well in both in a team setting and independently;
  • Ability to interact with members of the public;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills including Powerpoint, Word, Access, and Excel;
  • Experience with Past Perfect Museum Software an asset;
  • Self-directed, detail oriented, dependable and resourceful;
  • Not-for-profit experience an asset;
  • Proven attendance record;
  • Class G driver's license;


Hours of Work: 35 hours per week, predominately Monday to Friday, some evenings and weekends required.
