Job Description:

The Art Gallery of Alberta is the oldest cultural institution in Alberta and the province's only solely dedicated art museum. Located in the City of Edmonton, the AGA serves the local community, the province of Alberta and plays a significant role in the cultural life of Western Canada. The AGA maintains a collection of over 6,000 works of art and presents an annual series of temporary and collection-based exhibitions with related educational, public and outreach programs.

Reporting through the Head of Exhibitions and Collections Management and working with the Executive Director / Chief Curator, the Adjunct Curator, Indigenous Art will contribute to the advancement of the AGA’s exhibition schedule, focusing primarily on the programming of work by contemporary and Indigenous artists. The AGA is seeking a bright voice in contemporary curating, and will be looking for candidates with a track record of original and critical thinking as well as evidence of innovation in exhibition conception and execution. The ideal candidate will bring an eagerness to work collaboratively with AGA teams, Indigenous communities, artists and external stakeholders. Assisting with the development, interpretation and presentation of the AGA exhibitions and collections, the Adjunct Curator of Indigenous Art will further general knowledge and understanding about Indigenous art and further public engagement and awareness of the critical importance of contemporary Indigenous art and artists.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a graduate level degree with specialized knowledge of Indigenous art, with a minimum of 3-5 years experience in the art historical research in Indigenous art and/or work in a museum or public art gallery context. Candidates should also have a broad understanding of contemporary art with a Canadian and international context. Candidates will have experience working on exhibition development, excellent organizational and research skills, an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and the ability to work under direction and in a team environment.

This is a part-time, adjunct position that does not have a residency requirement in Edmonton.

All candidates must submit a Cover Letter, CV/Resume and Statement of Curatorial Interest by email to careers@youraga.ca before 5pm MST on Sunday, April 22, 2018.
