Job Description:

 

The Historical Interpreter is responsible for the development, delivery, evaluation, and promotion of heritage site interpretation activities, guided tours, public events, school tours, outreach activities, historical vignettes, and other public programs tailored to various age groups (related to historical preservation). Interpretive tours, educational programming, and special events are regularly scheduled for people of all ages (i.e. youth, seniors, school groups, daycares, etc.), and all staff are involved in some capacity in the creation and planning of the programs. Teamwork is a very important aspect of this position.

A key piece of the position this summer will be the redevelopment of our downtown heritage walking tours. The Historical Interpreter will work with the Research Assistant and other staff to prepare a new tour plan with which the Interpreter will carry out walking tours for people of all ages. They will also research options for creating audio tours out of the downtown walking tour and the property tour on-site.

All staff assist in the general operation and maintenance of the museum, archives, visitor centre, and discovery centre, including assisting with major events, and programming.

The following is a list of additional essential qualifications necessary to this position:

Post-secondary education: History, Geology/Mining, Information Technology, Environmental Sciences, Drama, Education, or related fields.
Excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills
Excellent computer skills (incl. Microsoft Office/Google Docs, WordPress, Dropbox)
Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
Excellent organizational skills, planning experience, and a passion for education and history
Customer service experience

The following desired qualifications may be considered an asset for this position:

Creativity, enthusiasm, and a love of learning
Experience in or with the tourism and/or cultural sector
Knowledge of Rossland or West Kootenay history
Minor labour and equipment maintenance experience
Current First Aid certificate
