Job Description:

The Royal British Columbia Museum is one of Canada’s great cultural treasures. Our collections, research, presentations and programs enable us to tell the stories of BC in ways that enlighten, stimulate and inspire.

Reporting to the Archives Manager, this position is responsible for providing expert knowledge about archival and other historical records in a variety of formats. This position conducts original research both as an integral part of the acquisition and processing of records and the provision of reference and information services as well as for the purpose of publication, presentations and other forms of access.  As well, this position, in collaboration with museum colleagues, conducts research, produces displays and provides content for exhibitions and corporate projects. Other duties include assisting, as required, with reviews of restricted records and advising on freedom of information and privacy.  While formal supervision of staff rests with the Archives Manager, this position is responsible for assigning, monitoring and examining the work of Access Technicians.

You, as the ideal candidate have a passion for archival material and will be fluent in current BC historiography and the social value of public archives in a constitutional democracy.  You have excellent knowledge of born-digital records, as well as access considerations and strategy for digital archives. You have a strong understanding and practical application of archives best practices, care and handling procedures.  You enjoy working with a variety of people at all levels inside and outside the organization, and are known for building and maintaining strong personal and professional relationships.  You are keen to introduce others to the archives through participating in learning programs, outreach, exhibition and creative archival curation.  You have a positive attitude, excellent team-leadership skills and have a demonstrated high level of customer and results-oriented service.

Your qualifications include a Master’s degree in Archival Studies or Library & Information Services; or a Master’s in History, Political Science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  You will have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in an archives institution appraising, arranging and describing archival records in all formats including digital and you will have some supervision experience. Demonstrated qualification, knowledge or experience with digital records and digital preservation is desirable.  As well, you will be comfortable working in open source technologies and creating content and navigating social media platforms.

We offer an attractive compensation package, which includes a competitive salary, excellent benefits, a fabulous location and the chance to work in an organization passionate about preserving, protecting and sharing the wonders of the human, natural and archival history of BC.

This position requires Criminal Records Checks and all applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen or have Permanent Resident Status).
