JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Chief Curator at Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG), and working with the Curatorial and Education teams, the Assistant Curator of Inuit Art is responsible for the care, acquisition, research, interpretation and exhibition of Inuit art of all periods, and its relationship to other collection areas at the WAG

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Project manage exhibitions and oversee installations.
• Assist with collection development through location, research, recommendation, and justification of purchases and gifts according to set budgets.
• Assist Curator of Inuit Art in overseeing the physical care and exhibition of the Gallery’s Inuit Art Collections, and works of art on loan.
• Provide administrative support to the Indigenous Advisory Circle, including, but not limited to, scheduling meetings and travel, and providing agendas, meeting notes and follow-up action items.
• Assist with WAG liaison work with Indigenous and Northern government and stakeholder representatives and groups at the municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal levels.
• Communicate the cultural and aesthetic value of collections and exhibitions in person or through the media.
• Conceptualize and produce exhibitions including, where applicable, all phases of research, planning, budgeting, administration, installation design, catalogues or suitable interpretive materials.
• Provide all necessary curatorial materials for funding requests and grants, and participate in the application process for grants and sponsorships.
• Propose and organize exhibition touring programs, with the assistance of Museum Services.
• Research Inuit art in other collections and contribute to knowledge on Inuit Art in general.
• Maintain familiarity with collections, scholarly resources, museum practices and standards in Canada
• Establish and maintain contact with artists, peers, dealers, collectors, government agencies.
• Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• University degree in Art History and experience in an art museum or gallery, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
• Specialization in the area of Inuit Art relevant to the Gallery’s collection.
• Superior ability in written and oral expression at an academic level.
• Experience in project management.
• Ability to exercise sound judgement, to work independently in cooperation with staff, volunteers, and public.
• Working knowledge of an Inuit language is an asset
• Computer proficiency
