Job Description:

The Gem of the West Museum is a large rural museum located in Coaldale, Alberta. Comprising over fifteen unique exhibits, an art gallery, and an operational blacksmith shop, the Gem focuses on preserving and showcasing the history of the Town of Coaldale and surrounding area. We are currently hiring a Museum Assistant to support the day-to-day operation of the museum on Tuesdays through Saturdays during the 2019 summer season (May 10 - August 31).
Duties:
- Visitor reception and engagement.
- Connect with local schools to schedule, prepare, and deliver curriculum-based tours.
- Schedule, prepare, and deliver tours to senior, adult, children, and family groups.
- Supervise the museum on weekends including opening and closing the facility, cash management, and providing visitor and tourist information.
- Assist in an exhibit project as well as artifact storage organization projects.
- Assist in areas of Collections Management which may include but is not limited to artifact cataloging, data entry, exhibit maintenance, research, and creating interpretive labels and signage.
- Assist with planning, organizing, and implementing events.
- Carry out other duties and tasks as required.
The ideal candidate will:
- Excel at public speaking and engaging with members of the public.
- Have experience and excel at working with and educating children of all ages.
- Be outgoing and possess strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Be efficient, well organized, and adaptable to a variety of different tasks and situations.
- Be able to work well independently with minimal supervision.
- Standard First Aid Certification an asset.
- Prior museum experience an asset.
Preference will be given to those applicants currently enrolled in a post secondary program in the areas of museum studies, education, or another applicable program. All applicants must meet the requirements of the STEP program to qualify.
